Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's men's lacrosse team fell 9-5 to visiting Christopher Newport in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Saints drop to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Nico Burns and Kellen McCarthy both led the Saints with a pair of goals while Nick Hohman added the other. Lance Bernecker tallied a pair of assists with Connor Kellogg and Garrett Nealon each chipping in another.
Marymount took the early advantage, hitting home the first two goals of the game from Burns and McCarthy in the opening quarter. Christopher Newport (9-2, 3-1 CAC) would score its first goal with 4:47 remaining to salvage a 2-1 deficit after the first period.
In the second, the Saints continued to shut down the CNU offense while creating opportunities for itself on the offensive end. Hohman scored with 7:36 to play before McCarthy added his second goal with 1:31 left to give the Blue and White 4-1 lead going into halftime.
Christopher Newport came out of the break with a pair of goals in the first two minutes of play to pull within 4-3 at the 13:08 mark in the third. Another Burns goal halfway through the quarter put the Saints back up 5-3 but the Captains closed the frame out with two unanswered goals to force a 5-5 tie with one stanza to go.
In the fourth, the Saints couldn't find their offense groove as CNU outscored them 4-0 to seal the victory.
In goal, Derek DiGiovanni posted his seventh double-figure save game of the season with 12 on the day.
Joey Rolando led Christopher Newport with two goals.
Marymount returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to face defending CAC Champions St. Mary's (Md.) in St. Mary's City, Md.
