Men’s Volleyball Wins First Ever CVC Match

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's men's volleyball team won its first Continental Volleyball Conference match in program history with a thrilling 3-2 (17-25, 30-28, 14-25, 25-21, 15-13) victory over visiting Cairn on Friday night.  The Saints improve to 3-7 on the season and 1-2 in league play.

Bryce Ernsberger led the Saints with 20 kills while Tomasz Ksiazkiewicz posted a double-double with 13 kills and 12 blocks.

Matt Malloy added eight kills and a match-high 11 digs, Brett Refner had five kills, four digs and three blocks in his season debut while Chris Lionette chipped in eight digs and three kills.

Bronson Summers-Torres paced the Blue and White's offense with 44 assists while adding seven blocks and six digs on the defensive end.

Marymount rallied from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth and deciding set.  Falling behind 2-0 to start the frame, the Saints tallied off five unanswered points and claimed an 8-3 lead at the turn off an Ernsberger kill.  The Saints held a 13-9 lead late in the set only to see the Highlanders (7-5, 0-1 CVC) battle back make it 13-12 and force an MU timeout.  Coming out of the huddle, an Ernsberger kill gave the Blue and White double match point before eventually sealing the victory two points later on a service error.

Shaking off the rust after an error prone first set, Marymount came back in the second to outhit Cairn .333 to .105.  The second frame saw 15 ties and seven lead changes as Ernsberger collected nine of his kills in the frame.  The Highlanders fended off five set points in the set but couldn't keep up as MU evened the match with the 30-28 decision.

In the fourth, a back-and-forth set was tied late at 18-18 before Marymount made its push with a pair of unanswered points to force a CU timeout.  The Highlanders wouldn't be able to tie things up again in the stanza as the Saints closed it out on a 4-1 run to force the deciding set.

Ryan Garven led Cairn with a match-high 21 kills.
