Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Lynchburg 11-10 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints drop to 4-2 on the season.
Mary Ellen Whitlock led the Saints with four goals while Megan McGuirk added a pair. Molly Maher, Stephanie Keane, Rachel Duff and Chelsea Ritter each added lone goals as well.
Stephanie Flood, Maher and McGuirk posted assists for the Blue and White.
Lynchburg (4-3) opened the game with three goals in the first minute of play, and four unanswered to open the game, to force an early MU timeout before the Saints responded with two goals to pull within 4-2 at the 17:31 mark. Both squads would trade a pair of goals down the stretch before the Hornets closed out the scoring in the frame with to lead 7-4 going into halftime.
Opening the second half on a 3-1 run, LC looked to have the game in hand with a five goal lead at 10-5 with just 14:05 to play. Not willing to concede, the Saints went on an offensive tear and posted five unanswered goals to tie things at 10-10 and force overtime.
In the extra frame, Lynchburg posted the only overtime goal on a free position shot 88 seconds into bonus action.
Whitlock also led the Saints with six draw controls as Marymount won the battle in the circle 15-11 over the Hornets. Maher added four and Catherine Powell chipped in three.
Defensively, Maher paced the Blue and White with five caused turnovers and tied Ritter for the team lead with four ground balls.
In goal, Kiki Niebuhr hauled in 12 saves in the overtime loss.
