Women’s Lacrosse Edged by Randolph-Macon for First Loss of Season

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's lacrosse team was edged by visiting Randolph-Macon 12-10 in a battle of unbeaten teams on Thursday afternoon. The Saints fall to 4-1 after suffering their first loss of the season.

Taylor Johnson led the Saints with three goals for a hat-trick while Megan McGuirk and Stephanie Keane added two each. Mary Ellen Whitlock, Molly Maher and Jacki Belker each added a lone goal.

Stephanie Flood, Johnson and McGuirk all tallied an assist as well.

Randolph-Macon (5-0) opened the game with three-straight goals before the Saints responded with three of their own to tie things up at 3-3 at the 19:20 mark. The Yellow Jackets would then close out the opening half with four unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.

Marymount jumped on the board first in the second half behind a goal from Keane before RMC responded with a pair to lead 9-4 after four minutes of action. The Saints took control from there, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 5-2 over the next 16 minutes to pull within one down 10-9 with just under 10 minutes to play. Randolph-Macon would add a pair of cushion goals down the stretch as MU's late goal to pull within two wasn't enough to complete the comeback attempt.

Maher led the Saints with four caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Cecilia Pasquale and Rebecca Durkin both added three caused turnovers while four other Saints collected at least a pair of ground balls.

Marymount won the battle of draw controls 14-11 over the Yellow Jackets. Cat Powell led MU with three while Maher and Johnson both had two.

In goal, Kiki Niebuhr (4-1) hauled in seven saves.

Katie Russo led Randolph-Macon with five goals.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Lynchburg at Long Bridge Park. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.marymount.edu/athletics/wLacrosse and selecting the "live stats" link.
