Lynchburg, Va. – Marymount University's women's lacrosse team defeated Lynchburg 10-8 on the road in its 2014 season opener on Saturday afternoon. The season opening victory is the second-straight for the Saints.
Taylor Johnson led the Saints with a game-high four goals while Megan McGuirk and Courtney Oehl both posted hat-tricks with three goals each. McGuirk chipped in a pair of assists with Chelsea Ritter adding another.
A closely contested game from the start, neither team could break the game open in the opening half. With the Saints leading 2-1, Lynchburg (0-2) scored three goals in a two minute span to take their largest lead of the game at 4-2. Back-to-back scores from MU knotted things up with just over two minutes to play before the Hornets scored again with 1:27 remaining to take a 5-4 lead into the break.
Coming out of the half, both teams went scoreless for the first 10 minutes before LC scored to lead 6-4. From there, Marymount scored six unanswered goals over the next 16 minutes to take a 10-6 advantage with 4:52 remaining. Lynchburg would manage a pair of late goals but couldn't make up enough ground down the stretch.
Natalie Tinkham and Ritter led MU with three draw controls each with Tinkham leading the way with four ground balls.
Caroline Carozza led Lynchburg with two goals.
