Women’s Lacrosse Wins Home Opener in Overtime

Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's lacrosse team won its 2014 home opener in thrilling fashion with a 17-16 overtime victory over visiting Mount Union on Sunday night.  The Saints improve to 2-0 on the season.

Courtney Oehl and Taylor Johnson both led the Saints with four goals while Megan McGuirk and Molly Maher all posted hat-tricks with three goals each.  Natalie Tinkham added another two goals for the Blue and White with Jacki Belker adding another.

Belker, Johnson, and Chelsea Ritter all notched a pair of assists with McGuirk and Oehl chiming in with another.

Trading goals back-and-forth to open the game, Marymount scored three unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead.  The Purple Raiders (0-1) would respond with three of the next four scores in the half to pull within one at 6-5 before the Saints went on a 4-1 run to close out the frame and take a 10-6 lead into halftime.

In the second, Mount Union opened the half with four unanswered goals to tie things up at 10-10.  Marymount answered back with a 5-2 spurt to take a 15-12 lead with just over five minutes remaining.  The Purple Raiders then closed out regulation with three goals in a 2:38 span to force overtime.

In the extra period, Tinkham came up huge for the Saints and scored both goals for the Blue and White.  She hit the go-ahead score 1:12 into the bonus stanza before knocking home the game-winner with an assist from Ritter with 2:31 remaining.

Tinkham led MU with six draw controls while Ritter added five and both McGuirk and Maher chipped in four.  Meghan Higgins paced the Saints with four ground balls while sharing a team-high five caused turnovers with Maher.

Kiki Niebuhr (2-0) collected five saves in goal to earn the win.   

Katherine Doraty led Mount Union with five goals on the night.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to face Randolph-Macon in non-conference action.
