Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's lacrosse team defeated visiting Frostburg State 17-13 in its Capital Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon. The Saints improve to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
Megan McGuirk and Taylor Johnson both led the Saints with four goals each while Stephanie Keane added three goals for a hat-trick. Natalie Tinkham and Molly Maher added a pair of goals while Chelsea Ritter and Courtney Oehl each chipped in one.
McGuirk led the Blue and White with three assists while Tinkham added two and Jacki Belker, Keane and Ritter all had another.
A back-and-forth first half showed why the yearly showdown between the two programs is one of the most tightly contested in the league. Both squads couldn't pull away from each other despite Marymount posting two 3-0 runs and the Bobcats (0-7, 0-1 CAC) responding with a 4-0 output of their own. The Saints looked to take an edge going into halftime but FSU scored with three seconds remaining to force a 10-10 going into the break.
After surrendering the opening goal of the second half, the Saints took control of the game courtesy of a 5-0 run over a 10 minute span to take a 15-11 lead with 10:37 remaining. The Bobcats would pull within a two goals, down 15-13 at the 6:21 mark, but McGuirk and Johnson put the game away with goals down the stretch.
Maher led all players with six caused turnovers and five grounds balls while hauling in four draw controls. Tinkham added six draw controls in the win.
Megan Hart and Emily Walker led Frostburg with two goals each.
