Arlington, Va. – Marymount University's women's lacrosse team fell to visiting Capital Athletic Conference newcomer Christopher Newport 16-5 in its home finale on Saturday afternoon. The Saints drop to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in league play.
A back-and-forth start to the game saw both teams trade goals for the opening seven minutes of action. Christopher Newport (8-6, 3-3 CAC) then broke open the 2-2 tie with six unanswered goals over a 20 minutes span to lead 8-2 with two minutes to play. In the final 2:00, the Saints went on a 3-0 run to pull within 8-5 before the Captains scored twice in the final :32 seconds to take a 10-5 lead into halftime.
Scoring slowed down dramatically in the second half as CNU outscored Marymount 6-0 in the final frame to seal the victory.
Maher also led the Blue and White with five caused turnovers, five ground balls and four draw controls.
Ashton Marshall led Christopher Newport with five goals.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to face top-ranked Salisbury in CAC competition.
