Sands and Torres Named Saints of the Week

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Marymount University Department of Athletics is pleased to announce a new way for student-athletes to be recognized for their accomplishments with the introduction of the "Saints of the Week".

This week's winners are Sydney Sands from the women's volleyball team and Leonardo Torres from the men's soccer team.

Sands helped lead the Saints to a 3-2 record at the conclusion of their opening week of play. The sophomore tallied 98 assists, 39 digs, 20 kills, and a team-high 12 service aces. In MU's five-set win over the Catholic University of America, the Chandler, Arizona, native, recorded a double-double with 39 assists and 12 digs. As a result, Sands was named the Atlantic East Conference Specialty Player of the Week.

Torres kicked off his collegiate career in style over the weekend, as he tallied six points across two games. The rookie was handed the start in Marymount's opener against Shenandoah and left his mark on the pitch with two goals and an assist. The Manassas, Virginia, native followed that up with an assist on Marymount's marker against Catholic on Sunday afternoon.

Sands and the women's volleyball team hit the court again on Friday, September 10, when they take on Lebanon Valley College at 5:00 p.m. to open the Garnet Quad Tournament at Swarthmore College. Torres and the men's soccer team return to action on Wednesday, September 8, to take on McDaniel on the road at 4:00 p.m.
