Softball to Take Part in Arlington County's Annual First Responders Cup

ARLINGTON, Va. -- This upcoming Saturday, September 11, will mark the 20th anniversary of the attacks that forever changed the nation and the lives of so many. In honor of the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice on that day, Arlington County has hosted the First Responders Fastpitch Tournament since 2002, and this year, the Marymount University Softball team will play a role in the time-honored event.

The First Responders Cup started on September 11th, 2002 as a way to honor the brave men and women from Northern Virginia that rushed to aid the Pentagon. The proceeds from the tournament each year are donated directly to the Pentagon Disaster Relief Charities.

The tournament is being played on the Saints' home field at Barcroft Park and will take place on both Saturday and Sunday. The team will be integral in helping run the event, from assisting with the opening ceremonies to running the scoreboard, to running down foul balls, Marymount will be active until the final out of the final contest.

Head Coach Paige Knussman and the rest of her team, the newest athletics program at MU, jumped at the chance to be able to assist Arlington County for this staple of the community.

"I'm so excited that our first community-service event centers around not only our sport, but more importantly, honoring the victims and heroes of 9/11 on the 20th anniversary," Knussman said. "The First Responder's Cup has been a staple in the Arlington community since 2002, and I am excited to see how Marymount Softball can continue to drive donation efforts for Pentagon Disaster Relief Charities for many years to come. Jack Belcher, Rich Roberts, Greg Hudson, and Arlington County have welcomed us with open arms -- We are eager to help them showcase a highly competitive softball event on our home field.

The opening ceremonies for the event are set to begin at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 11.

The Armed Services Color Guard, the 3rd Army Old Guard Ceremonial Fife and Drums Corps and Arlington County Fire Department will be welcome the teams onto the field. For more information on the event click here. For more information on Barcroft Park, click here.
