ARLINGTON, Va. - The Catholic University of America and Marymount University have announced the Pope's Cup, an annual rivalry between the Washington D.C. area's two Division III Catholic institutions.

Similar to the Army vs. Navy "Star Series" and other rivalries across the country, each team in the department (in sports that both schools sponsor) will have an equal chance to contribute towards their institution claiming the Cup.

Each sport can earn one point for their school by defeating their local rival, with Olympic sports selecting an invitational/tournament or dual meet count as their Pope's Cup event. Teams will not be required to compete against each other in every sport.

"Marymount and Catholic have been local athletic rivals for some years," said Marymount University President Dr. Irma Becerra. "Given our prominent status in the region for top scholar athlete programs in Division III, it is very exciting to announce this friendly rivalry. We know competition is what motivates athletes to accomplish great achievements, and this local competition will provide also an exciting opportunity for engagement for our students and alumni alike. It's game time!"

"We look forward to competing in this annual rivalry with Marymount University," said Catholic University President John Garvey. "Our students give their best in everything they do, and I know our athletes will enjoy the opportunity to compete for the Pope's Cup. We are also grateful for this chance to strengthen our bonds with the Marymount University community."

The inaugural 2021-22 winner will be presented with the Cup on May 19 by Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington.

In future years, the winning University will be presented with the Cup at one of the final competitions of the school year. If the overall Cup points are tied at the end of the year, the previous champion will retain the Cup.

Students, alumni, family and friends are encouraged to attend "Pope's Cup" games and root on their favorite teams as they look to help their University win the trophy.
