LANCASTER, Pa. - After a complete week of play where the Saints registered a record of 13-1-1 over all competing sports, the AEC has awarded three different student-athletes with Player of the Week honors.
Carlos Varona earned men's soccer Offensive Player of the Week, Hannah Mockenhaupt earned women's soccer Defensive Player of the Week, and Avery Finnegan of the cross country program rounded out the honorees by earning AEC Women's Runner of the Week.
A storied defender of the Saints, Varona led the team to a decisive 5-0 victory over Southern Virginia on Saturday, both on the offensive and defensive side of the pitch.
The senior registered the first hat trick of his collegiate career, scoring once in the first half and twice in the second, all the while holding the Knights to a blank sheet and only allowing four shots. It was the third blank sheet of the season for the 4-2 Saints under the leadership of Varona.
Sophomore Mockenhaupt put together an impressive week in goal for the Saints women's soccer team.
After helping MU to a shutout tie over undefeated Lycoming on Wednesday, with seven total saves on seven shots on goal, the Fairfax, Va. native earned two more wins in back-to-back matches over the weekend.
While hosting Stevenson on Saturday, the sophomore picked up five saves en route to the shutout win for the Saints. She also earned the win in the Saints' decisive 5-0 win over Notre Dame (Md.) on Sunday.
In just her second race of her collegiate career, Finnegan put forth another strong performance at the NCAA South Regional Preview hosted by Christopher Newport University.
Having the top finish from the Saints, Finnegan notched a finishing time of 25:31.4 in the 6k event. She finished the race in 57th place out of 165 runners, compiled of strong runners from the likes of William and Mary and CNU itself.
This is the second race where Finnegan has been at the front for MU, showing signs of a powerful career ahead for the Sterling, Va. native.
