ARLINGTON, Va. - Ellen O'Brien has been selected as the new Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Senior Woman Administrator for Marymount University Athletics. She began her duties on Monday, Oct. 17.
"We are thrilled to have Ellen join our athletics administrative team," Director of Athletics and Recreation Jill McCabe stated. "Ellen was a strong Division III student-athlete and her positive undergraduate experience is why she desired to return to a Division III campus and connect with the student-athletes. Ellen brings a strong background in compliance along with a wealth of experience across athletic operations. We are very fortunate and know she will be an asset to the team on day one."
O'Brien brings a comprehensive understanding of college athletics to Marymount after spending the last 10 years as the Associate Commissioner/SWA of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). While there, she was responsible for eligibility, accounting, and the conference grant program, alongside leading educational opportunities for conference members.
During her time at the CACC, she served as the conference's liaison to the CACC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the CACC Senior Woman Administrators, and to the CACC compliance coordinators.
Prior to O'Brien's arrival at the CACC, she spent two years at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa. During her time at Misericordia, she served in various administrative capacities in the athletic department, while also serving as an assistant for the women's basketball team.
O'Brien earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports Management and Psychology from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, graduating cum laude. While at Denison, she was a four-year member of the women's basketball team, garnering three All-NCAC accolades as well as being named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Third Team.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to join the Marymount University community and to return to my Division III roots," O'Brien said. "The excellent experience I had as a DIII student-athlete remains my driving motivation to provide a positive experience for future student-athletes. I look forward to working with the Marymount team to provide student-athletes with the support needed to succeed during and after college."
O'Brien earned her Master of Science degree in Sport Management from Ithaca College, where she served in the role of graduate assistant for the athletics department, assisting with game operations, payroll management and supervision of the student athletic staff.
O'Brien was inducted into the Walt Whitman (MD) High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.
