Men’s Lacrosse Edged by Catholic

Washington, D.C. – Marymount University's men's lacrosse team fell to former Capital Athletic Conference rival Catholic 12-10 on Thursday night. The Saints fall to 1-1 on the season.

Lance Bernecker led the Saints with three goals for a hat-trick. Connor Kellogg and Eric Martin both added a pair while David Huson, George Pugh and Mike Smith each netted a lone goal.

Marymount took the initial lead off a Pugh goal on the opening possession before the Cardinals (3-1) responded with three-straight goals to go up 3-1. The Saints would then score five of the remaining six goals in the quarter to take a 6-4 lead after the first.

In the second, CUA knotted things up at 6-6 but Marymount would retake the lead and take an 8-7 advantage into halftime.

Catholic would hold the Blue and White scoreless in the third while adding a pair of goals to go up 9-8 after three. With the Cardinals pushing their advantage to 10-8, MU battled back with consecutive goals to tie things up at 10-10 with 10 minutes to play.

Down the stretch, Catholic would hold the Saints scoreless while netting the game-winner at the 8:27 mark and a cushion goal with 3:29 to play.

Vince Lodato was solid once again at the 'X', winning 14 of his 25 faceoffs. He led the Saints with six ground balls.

Marymount platooned goalkeepers for the second-straight game. Ross Fernandez played the first half and hauled in six saves while Derek DiGiovanni played the second and collected 11 saves.

Chris Fuccillo led Catholic with five goals.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Penn State-Abington to Long Bridge Park at 5 p.m.
