Ali's second-half score lifts Saints over Pacers for third Atlantic East victory

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Marymount University men's soccer team picked up its third-straight win in Atlantic East Conference play on Saturday afternoon, 1-0, at Marywood University.

The Saints put the pressure on early, with four shots in the first 15 minutes, including two that were on frame, forcing Mike Gallagher to make the saves for the Pacers.

Following some rough play over the next several minutes, the Saints were forced to play a man down for the remainder of the game. The Pacers looked to take advantage, but freshman Eduardo Cardonne made two saves to keep the game scoreless.

The teams carried the, 0-0, tie into halftime, with the Pacers holding a slight lead in shots, 7-4. Manzanares tallied three saves in the half.

Neither team was able to get any shots on frame to start the second half, but the Saints would use a quick strike up the field to break the scoreless tie in the 72nd minute.

Sophomore Christian Melendez sent the ball forward up the field, where freshman Zakariya Ali was there to collect the ball and beat the keeper for his first goal of the year.

The Pacers came back quickly with a shot, but sophomore Ronald Clark was there to make the stop. Clark made one more save in the final moments of the game to secure the win for the Saints.

Cardonne and Clark each played a half in the goal for Marymount, coming up with three and two saves, respectively.

The Saints will return home to Long Bridge Park on Wednesday, October 23 to host Atlantic East-foe Wesley College; the opening kick is set for 7 p.m.
