Varona's Hat Trick Highlights Saints' Decisive Win

ARLINGTON, Va. - Behind senior Carlos Varona's hat trick and a clean sheet from the defense, the Saints men's soccer team earned a decisive win on Saturday evening heading into another big week of soccer.

  • A penalty kick goal from Varona sealed the deal for the first hat trick of the senior's collegiate career. A middle back by trade, he found himself in offensive action on the night, scoring twice in the second half to complete the accomplishment.
  • Manny Gaunaurd notched his second goal of the season in the match.
  • Freshman Merlin Torres earned the first goal of his career in the second half for the Saints.

How It Happened

  • The Saints hopped on the board first in the match in the 19th minute. Derek Rivera found Leonardo Torres who then found Varona with an open look, sinking it into the back of the net to open up the scoring for MU.
  • Marymount got back on the saddle quickly, with Brandon Jardine finding Gaunaurd with the open look to push the score to 2-0 in the first half.
  • Varona sank his second goal in the 48th minute, with the assist being credited to Derek Rivera.
  • The final goal for the Saints in the match came from a corner, with Jesus Rios putting the cross in the perfect spot for Torres to sink the shot.

Quote From Coach Kalin:

"Minus a 10 minute period in the first half, we played a complete and inspiring game. Very happy for the boys to get a convincing win leading into a huge rival game with Catholic Wednesday."

Up Next

  • MU will host Catholic next Wednesday, Sept. 21 for their annual Pope's Cup matchup. The night will also celebrate Arlington Youth with kickoff slated for 7:00 PM.
