Saints Handle Cabrini to Take Control of Atlantic East

ARLINGTON, Va. – In perhaps its most complete performance of the season, Marymount men's soccer handled Cabrini 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Long Bridge PArk. It was MU's first win over Cabrini since the two sides joined the Atlantic East in 2018.

  • Leonardo Torres has now scored a goal in four straight games and in six of his last seven appearances. With two goals on Saturday, he now has 16 goals this season, which ties his own school record set a year ago.
  • Derek Rivera added two assists, upping his season tally to 10. He is now tied for the school record for season assists that has stood since 1999 (Steve Heitkamp).
  • As a team, the Saints tied the season record for wins (10), shutouts (seven), and conference wins (four) with the dominant performance.
  • Marymount has now won four matches in a row and six of its last seven.

  • After a long service ahead in the 27th minute, Rivera and Torres traded one-touch passes before Torres fired a goal with his right foot after beating the Cabrini defense.
  • In the 31st minute, Marymount drew one of its 11 corner kicks to set up its second goal of the day.
  • Nicolas Robles fired a left-footed shot that took a deflection and hit the crossbar before Carlos Varona headed in the rebound to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
  • Just a few minutes before halftime, Marymount appeared to take a 3-0 lead after a series of touches between Manny Gaunaurd and Torres right in the front of the endline. After further deliberation, the center official determined Gaunard to be offsides.
  • In the second half, Torres gave Marymount some more breathing room with a clean header off the corner kick from Rivera.
  • With just under two minutes to go, Bayron Banegas picked up back-to-back saves to clinch the shutout.

  • "Just a solid performance and great execution of the game plan. Everyone treated this game with the importance it deserved and we got three huge points and another shutout. Leo was in the zone today. Now we just need to finish the process on Wednesday against Immaculata."

  • Marymount will close the regular season at Long Bridge Park on Wednesday against Immaculata. The game is set to begin at 7 PM.
  • With the win and Centenary's tie against Immaculata on Saturday, the Saints have clinched a top-two seed and a bye in the first round of the Atlantic East Tournament.
  • The Saints will host the Atlantic East semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The time and opponent is still to be announced.
