Men’s Soccer Clinches Top Seed in AEC Tournament

ARLINGTON, Va. – For the first time in program history, Marymount men's soccer will enter a conference tournament as the No. 1 seed after a 3-2 win over Immaculata on Wednesday night.

  • Leonardo Torres broke his own school records for single-season goals and single-season as he now has 17 goals and 40 points on the season.
  • The Saints have won 11 games for the first time in program history.
  • Marymount also set a program record for conference wins, as well (five).
  • MU enters the conference tournament winning five matches in a row and seven of its last eight.

  • Marymount came out ready to play off the first whistle as the Saints peppered the Immaculata defense with quality scoring chances.
  • Torres broke through in the 17th minute, scoring off his own rebound after chesting the initial pass down to himself.
  • Immaculata responded less than just over two minutes later as John Bohrer found the back of the net.
  • On his first possession after subbing into the match, Daniel Yi sent a great ball into the box that Torres headed down to Manny Gaunaurd right in front of the keeper, who slotted the ball home to give Marymount a 2-1 lead.
  • In the second half, Torres almost had a second goal but was whistled for being offsides by the AR.
  • Brandon Loarte was able to give Marymount some breathing room in the 73rd minute with a one-touch finish off a great pass from Gaunaurd.
  • The Mighty Macs did not go away easily as they cut into the deficit with an 81st-minute tally.
  • Marymount withstood the rally to clinch the 3-2 victory.

  • "This is a special group of guys. They have shown that being disciplined and believing in each other is the key to great accomplishments. This is the first regular season championship for Marymount and we are so thrilled to end the 33-year drought. I'm so happy for this team. They deserved this."

  • As the top seed, Marymount has earned a first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the Atlantic East Tournament.
  • The Saints will host the semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The time and opponent are still to be announced.
