Mayer Announced as Yeardly Love Unsung Hero Award Finalist

Sophia Mayer of the women's lacrosse team has been selected as a Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Finalist after the 2022 season.

Coaches from across the country nominate student-athletes and a selection of just five finalists from men's and women's lacrosse programs are selected from Division I, II, and III.

The award is described from the foundation as, "given by the One Love Foundation in honor of Yeardley Love and recognizes the accomplishments of men's and women's collegiate lacrosse players from Divisions I, II and III who demonstrate dedication, integrity, humility, hard work, community service, leadership, kindness and sportsmanship - all qualities Yeardley exemplified throughout her life."

The Marymount women's lacrosse program supports the foundation yearly in the form of their One Love game, spreading awareness for the organization and expressing its importance to their families and fans.

Mayer, a local product of Alexandria, Va., finds herself on the field as a defender for the Saints and is currently pursuing a Biochemistry/Pre-Medicine degree.

"Soph exemplifies what it means to be an unsung hero everyday," women's lacrosse head coach Kate Athing stated. "She is dedicated, reliable, and selfless. She's humble while always being the hardest worker in the room. She's a student-athlete and firefighter on top of being a shining example of what it means to be a Saint."

The winners of the award will be announced in the later part of May, per One Love.
