NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Marymount University women's volleyball team's historic season came to a close on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-0 decision to No. 7 Trinity (Texas) University in the NCAA DIII Regional Finals at Christopher Newport University.
The Saints finish the 2019 season with a 26-11 record, just two wins shy of a program record. They went perfect through Atlantic East Conference play and earned their second-straight conference championship, the second in program history. They followed it up with their second-straight appearance in the NCAA tournament for the second time in program history, and earned the program's first NCAA tournament victory in the Regional Quarterfinals against Randolph-Macon College. On Saturday, they took on the host Captains who defeated them twice in the regular season, battling to a five-set victory to advance to Sunday's Regional Finals against a highly-ranked opponent in the Tigers.
Although a three-set match, MU held its own through the first half of all three sets led by the efforts of freshman hitter Elissa Munsterman with a team-high eight kills, a service ace and five digs. Senior libero Theresa Buscemi concluded her stellar four-year career with a match-high 19 digs to go with a service ace.
At the conclusion of the match, the NCAA announced the All-Region Tournament team, which included Munsterman and junior Mykael Johnson. Munsterman had 31 kills across the three matches, headlined by a strong 16 kills in the Regional Semifinals against CNU. Johnson added this accolade to her already-prolific junior season, as she finished with 45 kills and 38 digs through the three matches.
Marymount graduates three seniors in Buscemi, Alana Ball, and Miranda Cooksey, with one being a four-year starter, while returning the rest of a roster that includes seven in the junior class. Six of those juniors have been key contributors through the past three seasons, with five being starters.
