Saints Drop Pair in First Day of W&L Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. - Marymount University Women's volleyball team fought hard on the first day of the Washington and Lee University Invitational but came up short. The Saints took four sets over the course of the day but ultimately fell short against the Centre College Colonels and the Generals in 3-2 decisions.

Notable

  • In the tightly contested first match, Elissa Munsterman notched another double-double in the young season with 14 kills and digs apiece, respectively. The kills were the most from both teams

  • Alexis Franklin led the Saints with 22 assists, Sydney Sands added nine. 

  • Mya Bowers had four blocks.

  • In the match against Washington and Lee, the Saints outhit the Generals, .178 to .133.

  • Natalie Garbalosa led the Saints with 27 digs against the Generals.

  • Myia Jeter, Katee Stromberg, and Johanna Modica worked together on the Marymount defense and registered five blocks each.

How It Happened

  • The Saints battled out a win in the first set. After being down by five at 20-15, they fought back to ultimately take the set, with a service ace from Stromberg finishing it off. 

  • After dropping the next two sets, the Saints again showed fortitude, winning the next set 25-18 to push a fifth and decisive set.

  • Against the Generals Marymount kept the match close but fell short in the first two sets. 

  • In set three after Sands stepped up to serve the Saints capitalized on a moment of weakness in the General's offense and added six points to bring the total to 21-16. 

  • The Saints held on to their lead in set three and added a win in set four.

  • The fifth set was a close fight but after a tied score at 11-11, the Generals took the set 15-13.

 

Up Next

  • Marymount stays in Lexington for another pair of matches on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the W&L Invitational. The first match is set for 11:00 AM against the Quakers of Guilford, with a 1:30 PM showing thereafter against Gettysburg. 

  • Marymount will host its first home competition in a tri-match against Averett and York on Saturday, Sept. 17.
