Men's Basketball Downs Bridgewater on the Road

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Marymount University men's basketball team took a late lead on the road and never looked back on Tuesday evening in an 80-75 victory over Bridgewater College.

Marymount and Bridgewater battled back-and-forth throughout the contest which featured eight lead changes. While the Eagles took a slim 39-36 lead into the halftime break, the Saints outscored the home side, 44-36 in the second half to seal the victory. Marymount improved from the floor in the second frame with a 48.1% (13-for-27) field goal percentage, compared to a cold snap from the Eagles, who mustered just a 26.4% (12-for-33) mark from the field.

The Saints battled the Eagles to a near standstill for a majority of the second half and took a brief lead with the score at 55-54 after a three-pointer from Marcus Stubbs. Bridgewater answered back, however, and built a six-point edge after a three-point play from Rashod Smith with a little over nine minutes on the clock.

MU stuck close to Bridgewater from there and unleashed one decisive counter punch that spanned the final four minutes. With the score level at 65-65, the Blue and White rattled off an 11-2 run that made it a 76-67 game with 51 seconds left on the clock. Miles Brown started the run with a make from an offensive rebound, while Montell Cooper supplied four of the 11 points. Xavier Reaves highlighted the barrage with an emphatic dunk after he pickpocketed the Eagles' Andy Pack.

With a nine-point edge, the Saints saw out the last-ditch efforts of Bridgewater with some timely free throws to seal the five-point win.

Reaves, the reigning Atlantic East Conference Defensive Player of the Week, continued his strong start to the season with a team-high 19 points and eight rebounds. The senior also tallied six steals to bring his conference-leading total to 20 through five games.

Zamir Clifton finished with 16 points and six boards in 20 minutes of action off of the bench. Wyatt Hockenberry rounded out MU's double-digit scorers with 11 points and a steal.

The Saints return to action following the holiday on Sunday, November 28, when they welcome Eastern Mennonite University to Converse Family Fieldhouse. Tip-off against the Royals is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
